The Long Search Comes to an End
In a deeply emotional development, the body of climber Sohail Sakhi has finally been recovered by local volunteers on Broad Peak (8,047m). After months of uncertainty and relentless effort, the search that touched the hearts of the entire mountaineering community has reached a bittersweet conclusion.
What Happened on Broad Peak
The tragedy unfolded during the summer climbing season on Broad Peak, when 10 climbers lost their lives after an accident high on the mountain. Following the incident, a large-scale search operation was launched by the Pakistan Army alongside local mountaineering teams in a race against the extreme conditions of the Karakoram.
Despite the scale of the effort, recovery on an 8,000-metre peak is brutally difficult. The bodies of 7 climbers were recovered by a dedicated Sarbaz climber from Hunza, who braved extreme danger to bring them down. Unfortunately, the body of Sohail Sakhi could not be found during those initial searches, leaving his family and friends in painful limbo.
Recovered by Local Volunteers on 13 August
On 13 August, local volunteers searching the mountain finally located Sohail Sakhi's body. The recovery team carefully brought the body down to base camp, where arrangements were made for its dignified handover to his family.
This recovery is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the local volunteers and high-altitude workers of Gilgit-Baltistan, who risked their own lives to bring closure to a grieving family.
