Every July, the world's highest polo ground at Shandur Top (3,700m) comes alive as teams from Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral battle it out in traditional free-style polo.
Set against the dramatic backdrop of snow-capped peaks and alpine lakes, the festival is a celebration of northern culture - from thundering horses and dashing players to folk music, dancing and nights spent under a canopy of stars.
The four-day event is one of the most unique sporting festivals in the world and a bucket-list experience for any visitor to Pakistan.
Getting there: The Shandur pass connects Chitral and Ghizer districts. Travel from Gilgit takes about 5-6 hours, and from Chitral about 4 hours, along some of the most spectacular mountain roads in the country.
