Skardu Travel Guide

Skardu is the gateway to Baltistan, Deosai National Park, and some of Pakistan’s most spectacular high-altitude landscapes. The region combines turquoise alpine lakes, cold deserts, historic Balti forts, mountain valleys and access routes toward K2 and other major Karakoram peaks.

Skardu sits at roughly 2,200–2,400 metres above sea level, so visitors should allow some time to adjust to the altitude. A 5–7 day trip is ideal for seeing the main attractions without rushing.

How to Reach Skardu

Image

✈️ By Air — Islamabad to Skardu

The quickest way to reach Skardu is by air from Islamabad International Airport to Skardu Airport.

The flight takes approximately 45–60 minutes, depending on the routing and conditions. Flights are highly scenic, but mountain weather can cause delays or cancellations, so it is wise to keep some flexibility in your itinerary.

Best for:

  • Short holidays
  • Families
  • First-time visitors
  • Travellers who want to maximise time in Skardu

Important: Confirm your flight status before travelling to the airport and keep a buffer day if you have an important onward connection.

🚙 By Road — Islamabad to Skardu

Image

Travelling to Skardu by road is a much longer but highly scenic experience.

Main route

Islamabad → Mansehra → Besham → Chilas → Jaglot → Astore/Skardu Road → Skardu

Depending on road conditions, traffic and stops, the journey generally takes well over a day, so it is better planned as a multi-day road trip rather than a single continuous drive.

Why travel by road?

  • Mountain scenery
  • Indus River landscapes
  • Photography opportunities
  • Local villages
  • Flexible stops
  • Opportunity to combine Skardu with other destinations

Respect local culture

Carry cash

Card and digital-payment availability can be less reliable outside major tourist establishments.

Keep extra time for travel

Mountain weather can affect flights and road journeys.

Hire experienced local drivers

For Deosai, Basho and other difficult routes, use an experienced local 4×4 driver.

Carry warm clothing

Even during summer, temperatures can fall considerably at night and at high elevations.

Protect the environment

Take your rubbish with you and avoid damaging plants or disturbing wildlife.

Drink enough water

Altitude, dry air and physical activity can increase dehydration.

DON'T

Don't underestimate altitude

Deosai is far higher than Skardu city. Avoid immediately undertaking strenuous activity if you are not acclimatised.

Don't approach wildlife

Never chase, feed or attempt to photograph wild animals from dangerously close distances.

Don't litter

Do not leave plastic, bottles or food waste in lakes, deserts, valleys or national-park areas.

Don't drive mountain roads aggressively

Roads can be narrow, steep and exposed. Follow your driver's advice.

Don't rely completely on mobile connectivity

Remote valleys may have limited or no reliable coverage.

Don't ignore weather warnings

Conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

Don't enter restricted areas

Follow local instructions, park regulations and security requirements.
